Safety in the car

During lockdown, you must not leave the house unless it is for essential journeys only. When travelling on a essential journey, remember the following points:

Car Seats

You can choose a child car seat based on your child’s height or weight. Children must normally use a child car seat until they’re 12 years old or 135 cm tall, whichever comes first.

Children over 12 or more than 135cm tall must wear a seat belt.

Seat Belts

As a parent or carer, if you have children travelling in your car, you will need to understand the legal requirements around seatbelts.

As the driver, you’re responsible for seat belt wearing and restraint use by children under 14 years. This is for the safety of everyone in the car, and the penalty for offenders is a £100 fixed penalty notice.

Distractions

While riding in cars, children should:

-Not block the driver’s view in the mirror

-Never lean or wave out of the window or throw or hang anything out

-Only open doors or windows if it is safe

-Keep your hands away from door handles while the car is moving.
